Denmark is far ahead of many other European countries when it comes to artificial insemination. More artificial insemination procedures per capita are performed in fertility clinics than in any other country in Europe. This is partly due to the fact that sperm donors can remain anonymous and therefore cannot be prosecuted in any way. It is also because Denmark is a great place for families: Long parental leave periods with financial support from the state, a well-developed childcare system and a high degree of acceptance of all sorts of family configurations make it easy for many heterosexual and lesbian couples, as well as single women, to decide to undergo artificial insemination in Denmark.
Danish health insurance companies also help to make artificial insemination more common than in other countries. Danish patients are fully reimbursed for up to three treatments – provided that the therapeutic treatments are carried out at a public fertility clinic. This also has an effect on demographic trends. Around four per cent of newborn babies each year are born thanks to artificial insemination in Denmark. By way of comparison, statistics show that the birth rate after artificial insemination is two and a half times higher than in Germany, for example.
The Stork Clinic Copenhagen has a unique history when it comes to the development of artificial insemination in Denmark. As Danish doctors were prohibited from treating lesbian and single women in 1997, the fertility clinic was founded by midwife Nina Stork. Many affected women were grateful for this opportunity. Ten years later, the treatment ban for doctors was overturned, allowing the Stork Clinic to greatly expand its range of services. Today, the fertility clinic houses an IVF clinic with highly specialised gynaecologists and embryologists. The Stork Clinic is one of three fertility clinics in Denmark that are part of the VivaNeo network.
As well as the Stork Clinic in Copenhagen, the VivaNeo Clinic Copenhagen and the Ciconia Clinic in Aarhus also offer childless couples and single women support on their way to having the child they so desire.
