Ultrasound

An ultrasound is a method of examination which can be used to view internal organs and other structures.

An ultrasound uses sound with a frequency so high that it cannot be heard by humans. The sound causes vibrations which are reflected by the organs inside the body. The reflected soundwaves are collected, and converted to a visual representation. This way, a physician can view the shape, location and size of the patient’s internal organs.

Ultrasounds in fertility examinations

Using a gynecologic ultrasound, your physician can determine and evaluate the shape, size and position of your uterus and ovaries. The thickness of the endometrium can be examined, and the presence of myomas, polyps and, for example, cysts in the ovaries can be detected.

Internal ultrasound

There are two types of gynecologic ultrasound: there is the transvaginal (internal) ultrasound and the transabdominal (external) ultrasound. Since the transvaginal ultrasound provides a qualitatively superior image, this is usually the physician’s preferred method. During it, a small device called an ultrasound wand (its medical name is ‘transducer’) is inserted into the vagina. The best results will be obtained if your bladder is empty. This examination is not painful. However, it might induce anxiety or be stressful for some women.

You are able to follow what happens during the course of the examination. Your physician will explain the images as they come into view on the screen. This examination will take several minutes.
