The basics of reproduction & causes of involuntary childlessness
The emergence of a new life depends on the fertility of the mother and the father. In both genders, it is hormones that drive the reproductive process.
- In women, the menstrual cycle is controlled by among other things, the hormones GnRH, FH and LH, among other things. These hormones also ensure that the cycle is regular.
- In the man’s body, FSH controls the formation and maturation of sperm.
For some childless couples, it is already helpful to observe their cycle, because on the days around ovulation, the possibility of conception is significantly increased.
In addition to having sexual intercourse at an unfavourable time, there are other physical causes of involuntary childlessness. These can manifest in equal measure in the man, the woman or both partners. Besides hormonal disorders that could lead to an irregular cycle or reduced sperm quality, there could be other causes of compromised fertility, such as endometriosis.
